During the 1940´s and 1950´s scientists were convinced that emotions felt by the pregnant mother affected the child´s personality, but this could not be proven. This proof became possible in the middle of the 1970´s, thanks to medical technology when a new generation of neurologists, obstetricians, psychologists and so forth, was born, and who little by little proved these teories.
The Firstart programme was created in 1982. From the following year, 1983, thousands of children, many of them now pre- adolescents and adolescents, have been born, and whose parents used our method during pregnancy. All of them, notwithstanding diversity of characters, are happy, active but calm, curious, sociable and communicative children who have a great facility and enthusiasm for learning and assimilating that which they have learnt, a fine sense of humour, self-security and a great love of life. A substancial improvement in their perceptions and development has also been noticed.
The first results obtained were presented in our paper during the First International Conference on Prenatal Learning and Bonding, the first congress to be held in Spain on that matter and which took place in July, 1992 in the Royal Monastery Virgen del Puig (El Puig, Valencia). The paper was also read at the First Regional Conference which took place at Malaga University in May, 1993.
Following the first congress, in January, 1993 in La Fe Hospital together with the Faculty of Psychology, both in Valencia, interest was shown in a scientific study taking place about the Firstart Prenatal Stimulation System, and because of this, an extensive controlled study was carried out on children from birth to six year sof age. In order to do this, a control group and an experimental group of nearly 300 pregnant women per group was formed, starting to use the Firstart Programme from week 28-30 of gestation. After birth, the mothers answered the questionnaires on psychomotor development. During the first two years this was done every six months and from two years old onwards, once a year. These questionnaires were complemented by others on aspects not merely of an intellectual nature, but also on existing affectionate ties and the adaption of the child in his/her environment. The results obtained were similar to those shown in the afore mentioned congresses. In the group which used our method, favourable differences could be observed in the linguistic development, in fine and gross motor functions, in somatic-sensorial coordination and in cognitive achievements in comparison to the group of pregnant women whose babies were not stimulated by the Firstart System. Furthermore, the mothers in the experimental group chose to breastfeed their babies in a greater number and over a longer period of time, they felt more satisfied with their maternity as well as with their babies. They also had a better understanding and relationship with them than the mothers in the control group.
These results were shown at the First International Congress on Pre and Post-natal Learning and Communication which took place in the Conference Hall of La Fe Hospital from 27th to 29th June, 1996, and which was endorsed by the Spanish Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics. This study is being published, and is the only one existing on an international level, which uses exclusively specific music sounds.
